The world of Cuentos de Hadas y Vampiros begins after an apocalypse caused by climate change. Their world wasn't very different from ours... until they discovered that the monsters from fairy tales existed, and they weren't going to let the world end!
A morally ambiguous vampire decided to ally with faeric beings and become the emperor of the world... Although he doesn't like the title of emperor at all.
This is where the first book in the series, Esperanza, takes place. In it, we learn that the New World is divided into three major species: Vampires, Fairies, and Mortals.

Vampires are legendary creatures that almost look like mortal humans, but they need to drink blood to survive. In this world, people usually recognize them because their eyes don't seem entirely normal. According to stories, they tend to come out at night and have sharp fangs, but since the sunlight in this world is controlled through magic and alchemy... it doesn't affect them at all! Sometimes it can be a little hard to tell if a human is actually a vampire, the key is in the eyes. In the new world, people know vampires as Nobles, and most of them hold government positions.

Faeric beings (they hate being called fairies!) have very long lives, but their biological cycles are linked to nature, so any kind of pollution affects them severely. There are all kinds and sizes of them: huge and tiny, with horns, with emerald green skin... They don’t get along very well with mortals, and it’s hard to see them in cities. While humans and vampires find it very easy to do magic with inert elements (metals, crystals, magic wands) and very difficult to do magic with living tissues (healing, magic related to torture methods, control of plant tissues), fairies are the exact opposite, so... watch out!

Mortals are what we know in our world as humans. Vampires also consider themselves humans, so, as a matter of courtesy, most people use the terms "mortals" or "living humans." During the dictatorship of the first citizen, Giacomo di Tommasseo, they are divided into three major castes:
Class A, they sell their blood to the vampires and receive a stipend for it. They don’t need to do any other work.
Class B, they perform any other work. All citizens of Class B earn the same, so each one is free to follow their vocation. It doesn't matter if you want to be a surgeon or prefer to cook, the vampires are going to pay you the same!
Class C, Non-Citizens, or Rebels, people who have decided they do not want to participate in the social system imposed by the vampires.
